Rolex Oyster Perpetual

ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL

In 1926, Rolex introduced the world's first truly waterproof watch called the Oyster. And in 1931, Rolex released the self-winding Perpetual movement. The movement featured a "Perpetual" rotor that moves with the wearer's natural wrist movements to wind the mainspring. The waterproof case and automatic movement would eventually become the defining features of the majority of Rolex watches. In fact, most Rolex watches, such as the Datejust, Submariner, Daytona and others, fall under the Oyster Perpetual range, but this is different from the Oyster Perpetual watch model.

The simplest model of the series is the Oyster Perpetual model, a three-hand Rolex watch that is both water resistant and automatic. Rolex originally offered the Oyster Perpetual in a range of materials including steel, gold and two-tone, but today they are only made from stainless steel. This small but distinctive production difference is indicative of the attention to detail specific to luxury and vintage watch collectors and buyers. A simple difference in color can indicate a specific period of watchmaking to the trained eye and can be an attractive detail for anyone looking for used Rolex watches for sale.

For the Oyster Perpetual model, there are numerous different sizes to choose from for both men and women, in addition to a range of dial colours. Due to its simple time-only functionality and stainless steel construction, the Oyster Perpetual is considered the entry-level model of Rolex watches.

Rolex Datejust

ROLEX DATEJUST

The first Rolex Datejust watch appeared in 1945 on the occasion of the company's 40th anniversary. It was the world's first chronometer watch with a date display via a window on the dial. Today, the Datejust is Rolex's best-selling model and the most varied collection in terms of metal, size, armband, dial and bezel options. In terms of size choices, the Datejust is available in 26mm, 28mm, 31mm, 36mm and 41mm cases. Bezel options range from smooth to grooved to gem-set, while metal options include steel, gold, a mix of steel and gold, and some platinum versions of the Lady-Datejust.

This wide and interesting variety in features and presentations is representative of Rolex's ability to meet many different preferences and style niches, as mentioned earlier. After all, as the world's biggest name in the watch industry, it makes sense to have Rolex models that can work for everyone.

One of the features of the Datejust watch is that the date window is instant - meaning that at midnight the date jumps straight to the next day rather than making a slow transition over several hours. With the exception of some very early models from the 1940s and early 1950s, all Datejust watches have a magnifying glass above the date, officially called the Cyclops. The Cyclops always rises above the dial in a spherical style and magnifies the date 2.5 times.

Rolex Explorer 1

ROLEX EXPLORER 1

In 1953, Rolex unveiled the Explorer watch in honor of the first documented ascent of Mount Everest. The then-new Rolex Explorer was based on the Oyster Perpetual watches issued to crew members of the historic expedition, but had its own set of design details – many of which remain intact nearly seven decades later. Reinterpretations such as these are a special and interesting way to pay tribute to timeless archetypes, while at the same time introducing creative and masterful details that become timeless in their own right.

As one of the most recognizable Rolex watch models ever made, thanks to its consistent design, the Explorer has always been a stainless steel timekeeping-only Rolex watch, featuring a black dial, Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9, and equipped with an Oyster bracelet. For most of its history, the Explorer had a 36mm case, but since 2010 it has been available with a 39mm case.

Rolex Explorer 2

ROLEX EXPLORER 2

Almost 20 years after the introduction of the Explorer for adventurers and mountaineers, Rolex released the Explorer II in 1971, specifically for cavers and polar explorers. Here Rolex once again demonstrates its ability to combine timeless design with specific interests and niches. Unlike the Explorer's original time display, the first Explorer II featured not only a date window, but also a fixed bezel marked 24 hours, along with an additional 24-hour hand (synchronized with the traditional 12-hour hand) on the black dial. As a result, the first Rolex Explorer II was designed as a watch with an A.M./P.M. indicator for adventurers who spend time in areas with irregular day/night cycles.

However, Rolex improved the second generation of the Explorer II watch by adding an independent 24-hour hand, making it a dual time zone/GMT watch. In addition, the choice was offered between a black or white dial. Today, the Explorer II remains a GMT watch, but with a larger case, available exclusively in stainless steel and with the option of a white or black dial. The iconic face of generations past is equipped with changes fit for today.

Rolex Submariner

ROLEX SUBMARINER

Arguably the most famous luxury diving watch in the world, the Rolex Submariner made its debut in 1953 as the first diving watch rated to a depth of 100 meters. Built specifically for divers, the Submariner featured a rotating bezel marked up to 60 minutes to track dive times, a time-only dial with luminous hands and hour markers, and stainless steel construction for corrosion resistance.

Move forward to the late 1960s and Rolex expanded the collection to include Submariner models with date screens. Furthermore, in addition to the steel Submariner Date models, Rolex later added all-gold and then two-tone Submariner watches to the range. Of course, Rolex has improved the Submariner's water resistance over its history and the 40mm case is now water resistant.durable up to 300 meters.

Today the Submariner is a varied collection. The Submariner Date is available in different materials such as steel, gold, two-piece steel and gold, in addition to a few different dial/bezel colors. In contrast, the Sub without date is only offered in steel with a black bezel and dial. Since the mid-2000s, Rolex has replaced all aluminum bezels in the Submariner collection with Cerachrom bezels, which is Rolex's proprietary ceramic alloy.

Just like the Explorer, the Submariner is an ode to functionality. As much as watches can be investments, status symbols of wealth, they are first and foremost carefully designed and crafted instruments for a very specific function. This is a piece of luxury built to thrive many meters below the surface of the ocean. Like many, if not all, Rolex models, the Submariner is luxury with a purpose.

Rolex Sea Dweller & Deepsea

ROLEX SEA DWELLER & DEEPSEA

In the 1960s, Rolex had to evolve its range of diving watches to meet the needs of the saturation divers who worked for Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises (COMEX), a French company specialized in technical and deep-sea diving operations. Rolex responded to this with the introduction of the Sea-Dweller in 1967. In addition to a deeper water resistance rating than the Submariner, the Sea-Dweller also featured a helium valve to release gases that can build up when saturation divers remain in pressure chambers for extended periods of time. Releasing built-up gases prevents the watch glass from loosening during decompression periods.

As with the Submariner, Rolex has also improved the water resistance of the Sea-Dweller, and it is now rated up to 1,220 meters. For most of its history, the Sea-Dweller was only available in stainless steel, with a 40mm case, black dial and black bezel, and fitted with an Oyster bracelet. However, as of 2017, Rolex increased the case size to 43mm and the following year offered a two-tone Sea-Dweller made of stainless steel and yellow gold.

In 2008, Rolex launched the Sea-Dweller Deepsea model with a 44mm case, water resistant to an incredible depth of 3,900 meters. While the original Rolex Deepsea model featured a classic combination of a black dial and black bezel, a special "D-Blue" dial variant was added in 2014 to commemorate James Cameron's historic dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Deepsea Challenger submarine to commemorate. This is a continuation of the love letter to the Submariner. Just as there can be no upper limit to creativity and expression, there should also be no upper limit when it comes to the functionality of luxury - as long as the Rolex name is on the watch.

Rolex GMT Master & GMT Master 2

ROLEX GMT MASTER & GMT MASTER II

In the 1950s, when commercial air travel was booming, Pan Am Airlines asked Rolex to design a watch for its fleet of pilots so they could keep track of multiple time zones. Thus the Rolex GMT-Master was born. As the name implies, the watch was designed to help pilots keep track of Greenwich Mean Time (which was used as international aviation time at the time), as well as local time. The intersection of luxury and innovation follows us from the depths of the ocean to the clouds and beyond.

The clever design of the GMT-Master included two hour hands on the dial: a traditional 12-hour hand for local time and a 24-hour hand for reference time. The reference time (also called the second time zone) is read from the 24-hour bezel, which the wearer can rotate to align with the 24-hour hand to set the second time zone. It is important to note that the first GMT-Master reference had a two-tone bezel to allow easy distinction between day and night hours - a design detail that is still available today.

In the 1980s, Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II, which featured a 24-hour hand that could be set independently of the 12-hour hand. This meant that the wearer could leave the bezel in the zero position (with the triangle at 12) and move the 24-hour hand freely to the correct time. Rolex eventually replaced the GMT-Master with the GMT-Master II in the late 1990s. Today, all current GMT-Master watches have a Cerachrom lunette and the models are available in different metals and bezel colors.

Rolex Day Date

ROLEX DAY DATE

Better known as the Rolex Presidential or President, the Rolex Day-Date made its debut in 1956 as the brand's most prestigious watch model. Crafted exclusively in precious metals (gold or platinum) and featuring a pair of calendar windows on the dial to indicate the day and date, the Day-Date also introduced a then-new bracelet type called the President bracelet. Characterized by a three-link configuration consisting of semi-circular links, the President bracelet has become as iconic as the watch itself. The name of the bracelet, combined with the fact that some of the world's most powerful people, including the US President, wore the Day-Date, paved the way for the famous nickname Rolex President. It's fitting that the world's largest watch brand can be seen on the wrists of some of the world's most powerful people, and just as Rolex models have proven reliable under extreme physical conditions, the Day-Date also proves reliable under extreme social- political circumstances.

Rolex has made several versions of the Day-Date over the years. The most classic and ubiquitous is the Day-Date with a 36mm case, a President bracelet and an automatic movement. However, there are also some versions of the Day-Date equipped with leather straps and Oyster bracelets. Rolex also made Oysterquartz Day-Date models with angular cases, integrated bracelets and quartz movements. There were also the now discontinued Day-Date Masterpiece watches with 39mm cases and five-link Pearlmaster bracelets. In addition, there was the short-lived Day-Date II with 41 mm cases, which has now been replaced by the Day-Date 40 with 40 mm cases.

Rolex Milgauss

ROLEX MILGAUSS

Also in 1956, Rolex introduced the anti-magnetic watch called the Milgauss. Named for its ability to withstand 1,000 gauss of magnetic fields, the Milgauss was perfectly suited to the emerging scientific and engineering fields of the time. A distinctive design element of early Rolex Milgauss watches was the lightning bolt-shaped seconds hand on the dial of the time-only model. However, the subsequent generation of Rolex Milgauss watches no longer featured this idiosyncratic design element and the collection was eventually discontinued in the 1980s.

However, the modern Rolex Milgauss was relaunched in 2007 and not only brought back the lightning bolt hand, but also offered a special anniversary model with a green-tinted sapphire crystal. Then in 2014, the Z-Blue Milgauss model was introduced with an electric blue dial and a green sapphire crystal - a model that is still part of the collection today. Whether for novelty or for field work, the Milgauss is yet another example of Rolex moving into specialized areas. A fondness for the original idiosyncratic design may make this model attractive to scientists looking for used Rolex watches.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

ROLEX COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA

In 1963, Rolex released a new chronograph collection called the Cosmograph, which was soon renamed Cosmograph Daytona to emphasize its link with the world of motorsports. The first generation of Daytona, which lasted until the late 1980s, featured manual-winding chronographs with tachymeter bezels and dials with contrasting subdials. Rolex Daytona chronographs weren't big sellers at the time, but they are now among the most sought-after vintage watches on the market today. This is especially true of the Daytona “Paul Newman” models, characterized by Art Deco-style dials and named after the famous actor who made a name for himself by selling one.

The next generation came in 1988, when Rolex transformed the Daytona line into a collection of modern automatic chronographs with Zenith El Primero-based movements. Unlike the previous generation, it became instantly popular and the Rolex Daytona established itself as the must-have luxury chronograph.

In 2000, Rolex updated the Daytona again, this time with an in-house automatic movement. The design of the watches remained largely the same and the popularity of the Daytona continued to increase. Sometime in the mid-2000s, Rolex began selecting Daytona models with Cerachrom ceramic bezels. The current stainless steel Daytona with black ceramic bezel is one of the most coveted luxury watches available today.

Rolex Yacht Master

ROLEX YACHT MASTER

In 1992, Rolex presented the Yacht-Master as an ultra-luxury sports watch for men, made entirely of 18-karat yellow gold, with a rotating time bezel and a dial with luminous time and date display. Soon, smaller models for women were released, as well as two-tone versions in steel/yellow gold and steel/platinum. The steel and platinum Rolex Yacht-Master watches are known as Rolesium and are some of the most popular models within the range.

In 2015, Rolex added Everose gold Yacht-Master watches, featuring black Cerachrom ceramic bezels and a brand new bracelet called Oysterflex, which combines a metal inner leaf with a black rubber coating. The following year, two-tone steel and Everose gold Yacht-Master models were released. And in more recent years, a larger 42mm Yacht-Master watch in white gold was added to the collection. The choice of different sizes and metals makes the Yacht-Master the most varied collection of Rolex sports watches to date.

Rolex Yacht Master 2

ROLEX YACHT MASTER 2

In 2007, Rolex released the next chapter in the Yacht-Master story in the form of the Yacht-Master II. Unlike its predecessor, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a complex watch featuring a regatta flyback chronograph with a programmable countdown timer (which can be set from 1 to 10 minutes) with a mechanical memory. Additionally, the bezel is called a Ring Command Bezel because turning it activates the watch's setting function.

The Yacht-Master II is not only one of Rolex's most complex watches, but also one of its largest and boldest designs, with a 44mm case, a blue Cerachrom ceramic bezel (except on white gold models, which have a platinum band) and a striking dial layout. The Yacht-Master II is available in steel, two-tone steel and gold, and all-gold configurations.
