16 Rotterdam Hotels on the road to Sustainability with Hotel Neutraal

Sixteen Rotterdam hotels are joining forces with Green Leisure Group, BlueCity, Rotterdam Partners and the Municipality of Rotterdam in the ambitious project "Hotel Neutraal." The aim of this joint initiative is to take joint steps towards a CO2-neutral and circular future, where sustainability is of paramount importance. In a time of changing perspectives, these hotels are taking the lead in making their business operations more sustainable, supported by practical tools and direct insight into sustainable opportunities.

The kick-off of the project took place at Postillion WTC Hotel Rotterdam on October 19, 2022, where Alderman Simons symbolically handed over the sustainable key to Monique Segeren, owner of Hostel Room. This symbolic transfer marks the start of an intensive year in which the participating hotels, in addition to striving for CO2 reduction and lower raw material use, also focus on savings in the areas of energy, waste and water. In the context of sustainability, we present these 16 sustainable Rotterdam participants, united in the progressive Hotel Neutraal project.

Hostel Room

Hidden in a monumental building in Rotterdam, Hostel ROOM, led by owners Monique Segeren and Mirjam Verschoor, is taking the first steps towards a climate-neutral hotel. As an active participant in the Hotel Neutraal project, which started in October 2022, the hostel strives for sustainability and circularity within the Rotterdam hotel industry. Participation in the project not only led to direct actions, such as replacing plastic sugar bags and preparing for solar panels, but also provided the opportunity for collaboration with other hotels, strengthened through joint efforts and knowledge exchange. Hostel ROOM, with 17 years of experience, highlights the growing demand for sustainable tourism, with initiatives such as Eco-Wanderer and 'bikepacking', and sees the future of the hostel as a sustainable and circular refuge, anchored in green values and exemplified by solar panels on the roof.

Ani & Haakien

Hostel Ani & Haakien is located in the beating heart of Rotterdam, founded by friends Joyce Brouwer and Danielle Linscheer with the aim of creating a traveler's accommodation with a nostalgic backpacker vibe and a keen eye for sustainability. As participants in the Hotel Neutraal project, together with 16 other Rotterdam hotels, they strive for a completely climate-neutral hotel industry. The baseline measurement provided insight into the current sustainability status, and in the cozy living room Joyce and Danielle enthusiastically share their experiences, emphasizing the concept of sharing as the essence of sustainability within their hostel.

Hotel van Walsum

Hotel van Walsum, located on the tree-lined Mathenesserlaan, offers a quiet environment in the center of bustling Rotterdam. Room Mate Bruno

Hidden in a former tea warehouse on the Kop van Zuid, in the middle of Rotterdam's 'Manhattan', is Room Mate Bruno. This colorful hotel with 217 rooms is a proud participant in the Hotel Neutraal project, which strives for a circular future together with partners such as BlueCity and the Municipality of Rotterdam. Bruno, part of the Spanish chain 'Room Mate', aims to make guests feel like they are staying in a friend's house. Director Burg de Rave, enthusiastic about participating in Hotel Neutraal, emphasizes that the baseline measurement was a wake-up call to revive sustainability efforts. The hotel has already taken sustainable steps, such as using recycled plastic in employee uniforms and dispensers for Room Mate Ecolution toiletries. Room Mate Bruno also contributes to social entrepreneurship by making rooms available to the economically homeless. Burg de Rave recognizes that although big goals are important, the focus is currently on starting small, such as reducing plastic use and other improvement points that emerged from the baseline measurement. Stayokay

In the deep red meeting room of Supernova, located in the vibrant heart of Rotterdam, Glenn Severin and Jan-Maarten de Reus shared their involvement with Hotel Neutraal. As a participant in this joint project, Supernova is committed to a circular hotel industry. Glenn and Jan-Maarten, the visionaries behind Supernova, emphasized locality and collaboration as essential pillars of their sustainability efforts. Despite the challenges of opening just before the Covid epidemic, they have grown the hotel into a 38-room boutique hotel, already embracing sustainable choices such as large soap dispensers and vintage furniture from local sources. The baseline measurement revealed several areas for improvement, where Supernova mainly wants to focus on easily applicable quick wins, such as better waste separation and reducing plastic use. The core of their sustainability vision lies in supporting the local economy, which translates into collaborations with local entrepreneurs, the use of local products and offering a platform for local artists. In their pursuit of a sustainable future, in addition to quick wins, Supernova remains focused on longer-term goals such as rain barrels, separate waste collection and ultimately even a green roof.
