Engels

 

Engels, the legendary grand café, restaurant and meeting center in the iconic Groothandelsgebouw in Rotterdam, was a place where many parties and special moments were celebrated. As the Rotterdam Balloon Company we had the pleasure of regularly providing balloons for birthdays and other festivities that took place at Engels. Although Engels is unfortunately permanently closed due to the corona crisis, we would like to look back on the rich history and festive occasions that took place here.

Engels was founded in 1884 by C. Engels and was originally located on 1e Middellandstraat in Rotterdam. Before the bombing of Rotterdam, there were several Engels cafés and restaurants in the city, including the famous café-restaurant Le Commerce. In 1952, while the Groothandelsgebouw was still under construction, Engels' renovated grand café-restaurant and meeting center opened near what would later become Rotterdam Central Station.

English quickly became a household name in Rotterdam and far beyond. It was a place where people came together to enjoy delicious dishes, a cozy atmosphere and of course the beautiful view of the city. When the Groothandelsgebouw was completed, the roof pavilion was opened in 1953 by Queen Juliana.

In 1988, Engels received the prestigious title of "purveyor to the court," in recognition of the quality and hospitality the business offered. For 68 years, Engels was an important part of the Rotterdam catering scene and a popular location for parties and events.

As the Rotterdam Balloon Company, we were able to contribute to the cheerful and festive atmosphere at Engels by providing colorful balloons for birthdays and other celebrations. Although Engels has now unfortunately closed its doors, the memories of the special moments and warm hospitality offered here continue to live on in the hearts of those who had the opportunity to celebrate here.

 

Rent a Room

At Engels in Rotterdam, located in the Groothandelsgebouw, you can enjoy various rooms and facilities for various events, including drinks, (staff) parties, weddings and private dining. The Rotterdam Room offers an intimate setting for smaller meetings and private dinners with a capacity of 30 people, including a private terrace. The Weena room with large windows and an attractive interior is suitable for various meetings for up to 50 people and can be adjusted in the evening for the perfect atmosphere. On the Entresol, with a private balcony for 350 people, you can enjoy an informal setting and the lively atmosphere of the restaurant on the floor below.

The decoration of the party creates the right atmosphere. The Rotterdam Balloon Company regularly decorates with balloons at Engels, we know this location wel and ensure that the room is decorated in the right atmosphere or in the desired theme. We will turn every room or empty space into an attractive party location.
